Your role:
The Strategic & Private Sector Housing Team works to shape the housing market for the borough and reform the local private rented sector improving the experiences of private tenants, whilst being part of a forward-thinking, innovative organisation who will provide you with the support you need to succeed.
The Housing Standards Team sits within the Strategic and Private Sector Housing Team and works to raise the standards of private sector housing, educating landlords and tenants and responding to disrepair complaints, licensing Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs), bringing empty homes back into use and checking compliance with housing legislation such as electrical and gas regulations and minimum energy efficient standards (MEES). The remit of the Housing Standards team is diverse and fast paced offering great experience and development opportunities.
This Environmental Health Officer role will help respond to the growing demand from maintaining high standards within the private rented sector. You will carry out inspections on properties and help to promote housing standards and energy efficiency across the Borough
In addition you will support the other housing standards officers with complex cases and assist the team in using legislation, in order to secure entry to hard to access properties.
This is a key role in the delivery of improving private sector housing standards by supporting the use formal enforcement processes such as enforcement notices and civil penalties to tackle serious cases with non-compliant landlords and owners.
About you:
You will have a passion for delivering outstanding customer care to our residents. You will also have exceptional influencing and negotiation skills and the ability to develop and manage relationships across organisations to deliver great services.
You will be motivated and have a positive attitude along with a willingness to help and offer advice. You will be resilient and have previous knowledge, skills or experience that will enable you to investigate complaints regarding housing standards.
You will have experience of working within the Private Rented sector with a good working knowledge of housing legislation and experience of undertaking enforcement action.
You will be confident in taking appropriate action and in the preparation and submission of evidence for legal proceedings on regulatory offences, attending court as required.
You will also have experience of dealing with the licensing of Houses of multiple occupation
You will have a good working knowledge of housing legislation and the HHSRS.
You will have a desire to learn and upskill by attending training and other CPD activities.
You will have a natural desire to work with landlords and tenants and to promote housing standards and compliance.
